Plate material is the biggest sound decision after the switch itself: the same board goes from bright and clacky to deep and thocky on the strength of one flat sheet. Here is every common plate compared.

The plate is the sheet the switches clip into, sitting between keycaps and PCB, and it is wildly underestimated by newcomers. Every single keystroke transfers its energy through the plate, so the plate's stiffness and material act like the body wood of a guitar: same strings, different instrument. Stiff plates reflect energy back up fast and bright; flexible plates absorb and darken it, and give under your fingers besides. The stiff end: brass, steel, aluminum

Brass is the classic premium clack machine: very stiff, dense, ringing high and crisp with that jewelry-like edge old-school customs are famous for. Steel is stiffer still, sharp and loud, common on budget boards for cost reasons rather than acoustic ones. Aluminum is the industry default: stiff but not extreme, balanced with a slight brightness, the safe middle that most prebuilts and many customs ship. Stiff plates also firm up the typing feel, since the switch has nowhere to sink; typists who like a planted, direct keystroke often stay here on purpose. Pair a brass plate with bright switches like the Alpaca or NK Cream and thin ABS caps and you get the full vintage clack experience.

The middle and the deep end: FR4, PC, POM, plateless

FR4, the fiberglass laminate PCBs are made from, has become the community's sweetheart: medium stiffness, neutral-to-poppy voice, and a reputation for showing the switch's true sound rather than imposing its own. If you want to hear what your switches actually are, FR4 is the honest mirror. Polycarbonate flexes visibly under typing, sounds softer and deeper with a poppy bounce, and pairs beautifully with gasket mounts and flex cuts. POM is the deepest common plate, muted and thocky, the natural partner for nylon-housed switches like the Oil King or Milky Yellow in a full thock build. Carbon fiber sits oddly in the matrix, stiff but light, with a crisp dry note. Picking a plate on purpose

Decide the destination sound first, then work backward. Chasing deep and muted: POM or polycarbonate plate, nylon-housing switches, thick PBT caps, case foam. Chasing bright and crisp: brass or aluminum, polycarbonate-housing or long-pole switches, thin ABS, taller profiles if you want extra resonance. Unsure: FR4, genuinely, because it flatters most switches and leaves your options open. Remember that flex cuts, half-plates and mounting style modulate everything here, and that a plate cannot fix upstream flaws: ping and rattle ride straight through any material. Which plate material is best for thock?

Do I need a half-plate or flex cuts?

Only if you are chasing a soft, bouncy typing feel. Flex cuts slice springy tongues into a plate so the middle of the board can trampoline, and half-plates delete the plate under the alphas entirely. Both soften feel and deepen sound, at some cost in uniformity, and they pair naturally with gasket mounting.
