What is case foam? Keyboard foam mods explained

Case foam kills the hollow echo inside a keyboard, and it is only one of three foam layers modders use. This guide covers what case foam, plate foam and the PE foam mod each do, and how to install them.

Type on a cheap board and listen past the switch: underneath the clack there is a boomy, empty-room echo. That is the case cavity talking. Every keystroke dumps energy into the air gap between the PCB and the case floor, and an undamped cavity bounces it around before handing it back as hollowness, the single most common flaw in stock keyboards. Case foam is the fix: a sheet of soft material cut to the case floor that absorbs the bounce. The board does not get a new voice, it just stops performing in a bathroom.

The three foam layers, and which noise each one fixes

Case foam lives in the case bottom. Its target is hollowness and reverb, and it is the highest-impact, lowest-risk layer: almost any board with an air cavity benefits. Neoprene, Poron and EVA sheets all work; thickness just needs to roughly fill the gap without compressing the PCB.

Plate foam sits between the plate and the PCB, surrounding the switches. It damps high frequencies and tightens the sound, pulling a bright board toward controlled. Boards with brass or aluminum plates respond most, since those are the brightest plate materials. The trade-off is uniformity: heavy plate foam can flatten the character that makes some switches interesting.

PE foam is the odd one out because it is barely foam at all: a thin polyethylene sheet laid on top of the PCB, under the switches. It produces the signature marbly, poppy sound, like glass marbles clicking, that took over sound tests between 2021 and 2023 so completely that many prebuilts now ship with a PE sheet from the factory. It changes the actual voice of the board rather than cleaning it, which makes it the most polarizing layer: people either chase the marbly sound or rip the sheet out on day one.

How to install case foam, step by step

  1. Open the case and remove the internals. Unplug the keyboard, open the case, and lift out the plate and PCB assembly so the empty case bottom is exposed. Disconnect daughterboard and battery cables before lifting anything.
  2. Cut foam to fit the case floor. Trace the case floor onto your foam sheet (neoprene, Poron or EVA in roughly 2 to 4 mm thickness) and cut it out. Cut clearance holes for standoffs, screw bosses, the daughterboard, battery and any weight blocks so the foam lies flat.
  3. Optionally add plate foam or a PE sheet. If you have a plate foam layer, sandwich it between the plate and PCB, checking that stabilizer housings and switch pins still seat fully. For the PE foam mod, lay a thin polyethylene sheet with switch-pin cutouts on top of the PCB before mounting switches.
  4. Reassemble and compare. Reinstall the assembly on top of the case foam, close the case and type. The hollow echo should be gone. If the board now sounds too dead for your taste, remove a layer: foam mods are stackable and reversible.

Cutting is the whole craft. Take your time on the tracing, cut slightly small rather than slightly large so the foam never bows the PCB upward, and remember every protrusion: standoffs, USB daughterboards, batteries in wireless boards, and the weight bar in metal cases. If your board is a gasket mount, make sure the foam is not so thick that it lifts the plate off its gaskets, which would change the typing feel you paid for.

How foam combines with the other mods

Foam plays a specific position on the team. It cannot remove spring ping or scratch, which live inside the switch and need lube. It cannot fix stabilizer rattle on the spacebar. And it overlaps with the tape mod without replacing it: tape reflects sound up and adds pop, foam absorbs the cavity echo, and plenty of builds run both. A sensible tuning order for a stock board is stabilizers first (rattle ruins everything), case foam second (biggest cleanup per minute of work), tape third, and switch lubing last because it is by far the most labor. Is foam cheating or a crutch?

There is a real debate here. Foam-filled boards sound uniform and clean, which some builders love and others call sterile, arguing a well-designed case should not need it. The nice thing is that foam is removable: try the board both ways and keep the version your ears prefer.
