Hot-swap vs soldered decides whether changing switches takes thirty seconds or an evening with an iron. Here is how sockets actually work, the pin and footprint traps, and which PCB type fits how you will really use the board.

On a soldered PCB, every switch's two metal pins are permanently soldered into the board: the traditional construction, electrically bulletproof, and a genuine commitment, because changing switches means desoldering somewhere between 61 and 108 switches, two solder joints each, and doing it all again in reverse. On a hot-swap PCB, small sockets receive the pins instead, so a switch pulls out with a simple tool and the new one pushes in by hand. That one manufacturing choice determines how you will relate to the board for years.

Why hot-swap changed the hobby

The obvious win is trying switches: hear something you like on a sound page or in the simulator, order a pack, and be typing on it the night the mail arrives. But the quieter wins matter just as much. Lubing switches requires removing them, so on a soldered board a lube project starts with a desoldering marathon, while on hot-swap it starts with pulling switches during a podcast. Repairs shrink from soldering jobs to part swaps: a switch developing chatter gets replaced in seconds, something worth remembering when the keyboard tester flags a flaky key. And resale or hand-me-down value improves because the next owner inherits options instead of your taste in switches.

The case for soldered anyway

Soldered boards still exist for good reasons. The joint is permanent and immune to socket wear or the cracked-socket damage that careless swapping can inflict. Soldered PCBs support more exotic layouts, because designers can pepper the board with alternate positions for split spacebars and odd bottom rows without buying a socket for every option. Many beloved enthusiast PCBs, especially ones with flex cuts or unusual mounting, ship solder-only. And some builders simply prefer it: if a board's switch choice is genuinely settled, solder is the set-and-forget option, and learning to solder opens the door to kits and repairs far beyond keyboards.

3-pin, 5-pin, and the clipping ritual

Every MX-style switch has two electrical pins and a fat center post. 5-pin (PCB-mount) switches add two plastic alignment legs; 3-pin (plate-mount) switches omit them. The rule is one-directional: 3-pin switches fit every board, and 5-pin switches fit 3-pin boards only after you clip the plastic legs off flush, a two-second flush-cutter job per switch that changes nothing electrically. Modern enthusiast switches are mostly 5-pin because the legs keep switches square in the socket, which matters more on hot-swap where nothing else is holding them straight. The socket-standard traps

Not all sockets speak MX. Budget boards from the Redragon world often use Outemu sockets, a tighter spec that accepts only Outemu switches; owners discover this the day a bag of Gaterons will not seat. Kailh Choc low-profile switches use a completely different footprint from MX, Choc V1 and Choc V2 differ from each other, and MX low-profile lines from Cherry and Gateron are their own thing again, so "low profile hot-swap" tells you nothing until you know which standard. And the exotic families are simply out of reach: Topre domes, Alps and buckling springs share neither footprint nor keycap mount with MX. None of this is a reason to avoid any board; it is a reason to read the product page twice.

The honest recommendation

Buy hot-swap unless you have a specific reason not to.
