Keycap profiles explained

Keycap profiles decide the height, shape and tilt of every key under your fingers, and they change both feel and sound. Here are all twelve profiles we render, compared with real measurements.

A keycap profile is the side-view geometry of a keycap set: how tall each row stands, how the top surface is shaped, and whether rows differ at all. Two boards with identical switches can feel like different instruments purely because of profile, and the profile audibly changes the sound too, since a taller cap is a bigger resonant chamber. The two axes that define every profile

Sculpted or uniform. Sculpted profiles mold each row differently: the top rows stand tallest and tilt toward you, each row below sits lower, and the tilt flattens out as you come down the board. Where profiles differ is what happens at the bottom. Some step down all the way to the spacebar row, others dip to the home row and rise slightly again, so the row heights in the table below are worth reading rather than assuming. Uniform profiles mold every row the same, trading the sculpt for total freedom: any cap fits any position, which ortholinear and ergo users need because standard sculpts fall apart on their layouts.

Top surface shape. Cylindrical tops (Cherry, OEM) are scooped left-to-right only, like a shallow trough. Spherical tops (SA, DSA, XDA, MT3, KAT, ASA, KAM) are dished in both axes, a small bowl that centers your fingertip. Flat tops belong to low-profile chiclet-style caps. Dish depth varies wildly: MT3's dish is the deepest of any modern profile and genuinely cradles fingertips, while XDA's is so faint the top feels almost flat.

Heights are community-documented approximations; manufacturers disagree by up to about 1.5 mm on the tall profiles, and relative differences matter more than absolute numbers.

How to actually choose

Start from what your fingers know. If you have only ever typed on prebuilts, that was almost certainly OEM, and Cherry will feel like a slightly refined version of home: lower, sharper front edge, same basic motion. That familiarity, plus the sheer volume of premium sets molded in it, is why Cherry is the default recommendation. Go tall (SA, MT3, KAT) when you want the retro look and the deep, characterful sound, and accept a real adjustment period; KAT deliberately softens SA's aggressive sculpt for people who find full SA fatiguing, and ASA splits the difference at OEM-ish height with a spherical dish. Go uniform (DSA, XDA, KAM, or SA's all-R3 variant) when you run an ortholinear or ergo board, remap keys often, or just like the clean flat-deck look. Go low-profile only when the switch decides for you: Choc caps fit only Choc switches and MX low-profile caps fit only low-profile MX switches, as neither shares geometry with standard caps.

Profiles and sound: the resonant chamber effect

Every cap is a small upside-down cup over the switch, and the bigger the cup, the more it resonates. SA at roughly 16.5 mm on its tallest row produces the famous deep clacky-thock that no low profile can imitate, MT3 keeps that depth but its pronounced dish focuses the strike into a rounder note, and 3.0 mm Choc caps have almost no body to resonate at all, which is why low-profile boards sound like a dry laptop tap.
