Spring ping: the ghost ringing inside your keyboard

Spring ping is the faint metallic ring that haunts keystrokes on unlubed switches, like someone plucking a tiny guitar string inside the housing. Here is exactly what causes it, how to cure it for pennies, and how to tell it apart from its cousins.

Type one key in a quiet room and listen to the tail of the sound. On many stock keyboards, after the clack fades, a thin metallic piiiing hangs in the air for a fraction of a second. That is spring ping, the most common parasitic noise in mechanical switches, and once you hear it you cannot unhear it. The good news, rare in this hobby, is that the fix is nearly free, takes one evening, and works essentially every time.

Why a spring rings

A switch spring is a coil of steel under compression, which makes it a resonator: pressed and released, it oscillates at its natural frequency like a tuning fork until friction damps it out. In a dry switch there is almost nothing to do the damping, so the coil rings freely and the housing and plate conduct that ring outward, with metal cases echoing it enthusiastically. The oscillation can be triggered by the press, the release, or the coil ends shifting against the housing and stem as the spring compresses off-axis. This is why ping is loudest on fast, full presses and why it varies key to key: each spring sits slightly differently. Spring design plays a role too; makers like TTC use long 22 mm two-stage springs partly to change how the coil settles, and Cherry's 2023 MX2A revision added a barrel-shaped spring and factory lube in part to address the ping and scratch its classic switches were known for.

The cure: oil on the coil

Damping a spring means giving it a film of oil, and the community method is gloriously lazy: bag lubing. Open the switches, drop all the springs into a small plastic bag, add a few drops of thin oil, Krytox 105 is the standard, seal, and shake for about thirty seconds. Every coil comes out with a microscopically thin coat that kills the oscillation dead. Reassemble and the ring is simply gone. Bag lubing is step two of the full switch lubing process, and if you only have patience for one lubing step, make it this one: it delivers the most audible improvement per minute of any switch mod. While the switches are open you can brush the rails too, but plenty of builders bag-lube springs alone and stop, satisfied.

Ping's cousins: leaf ping and case ping

Not every metallic noise is the spring. Leaf ping comes from the thin metal contact leaf vibrating, a subtler crunchier ring most noticeable in some tactiles and clickies where the stem legs snap across the leaf; it is harder to cure, since lube near contacts must be applied sparingly and carefully. Case ping is the case itself resonating, a hollow struck-bell note common in cheap aluminum trays, and no amount of switch surgery touches it: that is a job for case foam, damping material, or a better-isolated mounting style. Diagnose before treating: press a key slowly and silently to hear leaf noise without impact sounds, tap the bare case to find its ring, and flick a free spring to learn your enemy's exact pitch.

Ping as a buying signal

Ping correlates tightly with one spec: factory lube. Switches that ship lubed, like the Gateron Oil King, the Akko V3 Pro line and most TTC switches, rarely ping audibly. Classically dry designs carry reputations: the stock Glorious Panda is a famous pinger awaiting a bag lube, and vintage-spec Cherry MX switches pinged and scratched for decades before MX2A. One entertaining exception: the IBM buckling spring rings on purpose, its ping-click being the whole point of the design, proof that one era's flaw is another era's feature.
