65% vs 75% Keyboard: Do You Need the F-Row?

The 65% vs 75% keyboard question is really one question: do you press F-keys often enough to want them physical? Both sizes keep dedicated arrows and a right-hand nav column, both drop the numpad. The 75% adds a full F-row and, in the exploded layout rendered below, PrintScreen and Delete along the top, growing from 68 to 83 keys.

Both boards are drawn at the same scale, 1u = 19.05 mm, so the size difference shown is the size difference you would see on your desk.

What it costs is almost nothing in width, 16.25u versus 16u, about 5 mm, but a full extra row of depth: six rows against five, 114.3 mm versus 95.25 mm. On the desk a 75% reads as a taller, denser board, closer to a laptop deck, while a 65% reads as a low, wide bar with more breathing room around the alphas.

Pick the 65% if

  • + You touch F-keys a handful of times a week: renames and the odd refresh survive fine on a layer.
  • + You prefer the lowest, most compact silhouette on the desk.
  • + You want slightly simpler keycap compatibility with five-row kits.
  • + Media keys via Fn feel natural to you already.

Pick the 75% if

  • + You live in an IDE or debugger where F5, F9, F10 and F12 are muscle memory.
  • + You are moving from a laptop and want identical key positions, Esc through Delete.
  • + You want the modern custom scene: knobs, gasket mounts and the widest kit selection are 75% first.
  • + Alt+F4, F2 rename and F5 refresh are reflexes you refuse to chord.

Count your F-key presses for one honest day. Under ten, take the 65%: the layer handles rare presses gracefully and you get a cleaner, shorter board. Over fifty, take the 75%: chording Fn for a debugger hotkey you hit every minute is friction with no reward.

In between, the tiebreaker is hardware. The 75% currently gets the best enthusiast kits, so if you are shopping the custom market, it is the path of least resistance. If you just want a great daily board and the smallest case that never fights you, the 65% remains the sweet spot.
