The 60% vs 40% keyboard comparison is where downsizing changes character. Every step from full-size to 60% removes keys you visit occasionally; the step to 40% removes the number row, keys you hit in nearly every sentence, message and password. Below 60%, minimalism is no longer free.

Both boards are drawn at the same scale, 1u = 19.05 mm, so the size difference shown is the size difference you would see on your desk.
To scale, the gap looks modest: 15u (285.75 mm) against roughly 12.75u (242.9 mm), with the 40% also shedding a full row of depth. But the boards live differently. A 60% types like a normal keyboard with some chords; a 40% is a layer instrument you learn deliberately, with numbers, symbols and navigation stacked on thumb-key layers around a split spacebar.

- + You want a compact daily driver that anyone, including future you, can sit down and type on.
- + Passwords, spreadsheets and number-heavy chat would suffer through a number layer.
- + You want standard parts: the 60% ecosystem of cases, PCBs and keycap kits is unmatched.
- + This is your first compact board. Do not skip straight to 40%.
Pick the 40% if
- + You already customize firmware and think in layers: QMK is home, not homework.
- + Minimal finger travel is the goal, for ergonomics or typing feel.
- + You want a true throw-in-a-bag board at about 243 mm wide.
- + You enjoy the climb: the two-week learning curve is part of the appeal for you.
Our verdict
The 60% is a keyboard; the 40% is a commitment. That is not a criticism of the 40%, whose devotees genuinely type with less hand movement than any staggered board allows, and who tend to keep their boards for years. It is a warning about ordering: nobody should meet layers for the first time on a board where the number 5 requires one.
Go 60% first. If after a few months you notice your layers are tuned, your firmware is custom and your fingers resent leaving home row, the 40% is calling and you will know. If the Fn layer still feels like a tax, you have your answer, and it is the one with a number row.
