What Is a 65% Keyboard?

A 65% keyboard answers the single biggest complaint about the 60%: it keeps dedicated arrow keys, plus a slim column of nav keys, while adding only about one key width to the case. The usual count is 66 to 68 keys, 68 in the layout rendered below, arranged 16u wide across the same five rows as a 60%.

That small concession changes daily life completely. Text selection, spreadsheet movement, media scrubbing and every Home or End jump work exactly as they do on a big board, no layer required. It is why boards in the Keychron K6, Tofu65 and KBD67 mold became many enthusiasts’ default recommendation for a first serious keyboard: nearly all of the space savings of a 60%, with almost none of the friction.

Exact size and dimensions

The key area of this 65% layout spans 16 units wide by 5 units deep. At the standard 19.05 mm key pitch that works out to 304.8 mm wide and 95.3 mm deep before the case bezel is added. Typical 65% cases run about 315 x 110 mm. The one catch: right-side columns vary between boards, so some keycap kits need a 65% support note for the 1.75u right Shift and 1u mods.

What keys does a 65% keyboard drop?

F1 to F12 sit on Fn plus the number row, and whichever nav keys your specific board omits are one Fn chord away. Because the arrows and a nav column are physical, the layer only comes out for F-keys and screenshots, which most people touch a handful of times a day rather than every minute.
