Structurally it is three blocks with fixed gaps: the 15u main block, a 3u nav and arrow section, and the 4u numpad. That geometry has been stable for decades, which is precisely its value. Nothing lives on a layer, nothing needs relearning, and any keycap set, typing course or office dock assumes it. The cost is width: your mouse hand travels further, and the board dominates a small desk.
