A 96% keyboard is the answer to a simple question: what if a full-size board deleted its empty space instead of its keys? The numpad slides flush against the main block, the arrows tuck in beside it, nav keys move to the top row, and a few stragglers like Scroll Lock, Pause and Menu get cut. The idea traces back to the Cherry G80-1800 of the late eighties, which is why the closely related 1800 layout still carries the name. Boards like the Leopold FC980M and Keychron Q5 modernized it, and for numpad-dependent people it is close to a free lunch: roughly 67 mm of width saved with almost nothing given up beyond breathing room between key blocks.

Exact size and dimensions

The key area of this 96% layout spans 19 units wide by 6 units deep. At the standard 19.05 mm key pitch that works out to 361.9 mm wide and 114.3 mm deep before the case bezel is added. Typical 96% cases run about 380 to 390 mm wide. Fair warning: there is no single canonical 96% arrangement, so the exact nav keys and their placement vary from board to board.

What keys does a 96% keyboard drop?
