Before the cost-reduced Model M came the Model F, introduced with the original IBM PC in 1981. Its buckling springs actuate a capacitive PCB rather than a membrane, allowing a slightly lighter, crisper stroke, and its metal backplate turns every buckle into a ringing, musical "ping-click" that vintage collectors regard as the pinnacle of the mechanism.

Build quality is industrial to the point of absurdity: steel everywhere, keys rated far beyond any modern switch, boards that shrug off forty years of use. That durability is why working Model Fs still circulate, though clean examples now command serious collector prices.

A modern reproduction project (Model F Labs) machines new boards with the original mechanism for those unwilling to gamble on 1980s survivors. For feel-plus-sound purists, the Model F remains the buckling spring to beat.
